Clean beauty and skin care – what it means for us

Our skin is the largest organ in our body, and it has several roles, one of them being a protective barrier between our internal body and the external world.


I find it fascinating that dermatologists are more accepting of “psychodermatology” field investigating the role of stress and other psychological issues in skin problems. They treat social anxiety, depression and other psychological issues that can arise when people have skin conditions.

Our body, mind, and spirit are indeed fully connected.
How we are is a result of the collaboration of at least three superintelligences within us, and we have a role to play in it. Our choice has a direct impact on them, which results in our wellbeing or disease.


This upcoming episode is my conversation with Ale Franco about helping our skin from the outside in.

Clean beauty is a terminology that has been discussed for a few years, and we’ll talk about what it means here; what the “dirty ingredients” are and where and how to find the information. Ale also shares some recipes for home-made healthy skincare products that you can make using essential oils. Essential oils are highly beneficial for all of our physical, emotional and spiritual bodies.

Our intention for this episode is to provide you with some information to raise your awareness about skincare so that you can make healthier and better choices for you and your family.

Educated as an industrial engineer, Ale has been learning about the regulations and labelling policy around personal care and household products for years that she felt she must share it. Her mission is to help herself and others to make healthier choices for lives.

A Corporate Senior Executive for a retail business based in Mexico City by day, Ale is also a Young Living Independent Distributor. She turned her passion into an alternate professional path a few years ago.

The root causes of achievement addiction

It’s been five years since I started my path as a Subconscious Mind Reprogrammer. Five enriching years of self-growth and growing as a supporter of others.

It’s also been twelve years since the burnout experience that I had.


Throughout all these years, I have been diving into the depth of human psyche to understand what the subconscious mind is and how it works.
This underworld is a vast universe, yet as a Piscean, I love it. I accept that I will always be learning about this until my time to leave this earth comes.


I started doing this for me, and in the last five years, I started sharing what I’ve learnt along the way through my work with my clients.

Having me as my main stakeholder, I wanted to explain to myself clearly what got me into burnout.
I’ve been gathering many puzzle pieces of answers since 2009. In 2018, another big puzzle piece became clear. I concluded that I had behaviours resembling being addicted to achieve and grow for years before the burnout, obviously at self-care cost.


It was a big stamp – addiction, one that I felt very uncomfortable with. Yet, in my heart, I felt there was truth in it.

So, I continued to dive deeper. Shame and guilt were there with me for a while. Mindfully, as I dig deeper, I also continued with my healing journey. The two were inseparable. Over time, the shame and guilt dissipate, self-compassion grew, and I could articulate better what I discovered.


In April 2019, I released a podcast episode about achievement addiction.
Many people responded to this. Conversations happened, healing journeys commenced, and state of being transformed.

I’ve learnt a great deal facilitating processes for others, so it is time to share one specific aspect of achievement addiction: the root causes.


My friend, Julie Grauel, kindly welcome my invitation to facilitate this reflection. Similarly, we both love to explore the subconscious mind universe.


I hope to provide you with a perspective that can help you start your healing journey through self-healing or getting support from others.


After we recorded this episode, I continued reading a book by Gabor Maté, MD- In the Realm of HUNGRY GHOSTS – Close encounters with Addiction – and I landed in the following paragraph:

Any passion can become an addiction, but then how to distinguish between the two? The central question is: who’s in charge, the individual or their behaviour? 

It’s possible to rule a passion, but an obsessive passion that a person is unable to rule is an addiction. 

And the addiction is the repeated behaviour that a person keeps engaging in, even though he knows it harms himself or others. How it looks externally is irrelevant. The key issue is a person’s internal relationship to the passion and its related behaviours.


I know exactly what he means, and I know now how achievement addiction and passion look and feel differently in my body. When I am in the passion zone, I am at ease with all – growing, achieving, and caring for myself.

It’s a wrap!

Around this time every year, I often feel like I am on a  path of crossing a bridge. December always feels like a transition period, filled with hibernating energy all around. 

As I am writing this, I am tuning in to a word I’d use to describe my 2020 journey: “Surrender”.

This word is the closest label I can find to describe the state of being fully present and engaged in life while at the same time being completely unattached to a specific expectation.

Since my mother passed away in spring of 2017, I have been setting up a life where I can work from anywhere I want to while securing enough time to move between continents with ease to spend time with my loved ones – family and close friends.

Whilst every year, I made great progress in doing so, never could I have predicted what has been happening this year. The opposite of movement with ease is what we’ve been experiencing, not only between continent but within my own local environment. Most things that I’ve planned changed. 

For most of this year, I’ve gone through the grief for the loss of opportunity to physically reconnect with my loved ones. This physical connection has been essential for me to support my grieving process for the passing of my beloved mother. It was challenging not to have it. Instead, compounded grief was what I experienced, and this was intense.

By the summer, these compounded griefs created quite an anxiety of the fears to be homeless and dying alone out there. Fears got triggered by actually harmless things. So exhausting as this stayed for almost 2 weeks.

I decided to stop asking myself why things were happening the way it has been. This question didn’t help. The fact is, what happened, happened.
The situation that we’re all in right now will remain for who knows how long.

“The quality of your life correlates with the quality of your questions”, someone said to me once, and she was right.

I ask myself more frequently another question: who can I be and what can I do to make the most of this situation?

2020 was my accelerated path of surrender.

I am doing my best to accept what is, to grief for both my mother and for the loss of my original plan and the opportunities that could not be repeated nor regained (my nephew, Leo, will continue growing and one day he would not be so keen for me to squeeze and cuddle him), to let go of the beliefs I have against surrendering with grace, as well as to learn new life skills better.

I went through a full year of healing and self-discovery, a mindful journey going deeper into my inner world. To facilitate it, I have been using an approach that I was not open to doing until this year: Art.


The Diamond Bridge by Astuti Martosudirdjo


My art teacher, Anni Doré, supported me in channelling how I see and feel about who I am and my life through this collage that you see here; through geometrical shapes, patterns, colours and composition. I worked on this piece for weeks and finally completed it 2 weeks ago.  I call it “The Diamond Bridge”.


Through my heart, I see that my life consists of many bridges, small bridges, big bridges, long and short ones, old and new. Some bridges are going inwards, and some are outwards. The bridges offer opportunities to connect me with myself and the rest of the world.
As I cross each of the bridge, I get to experience a different facet of who I am and my life. There are many facets, just like the facets of a glorious diamond, strong and resilient.


I want to share this with you because you all have been a part of my journey, in your own unique way. THANK YOU.

As I am coming closer to the end of the current bridge, I feel a deep sense of contentment and a voice deep down saying lovingly – “I’m alright.”

Up close and Personal: Go-Getter’s Self love and Self care

I wish I can tell you that it was easy. It’s not. 
It takes some fundamental inner work to do that, and it is still an ongoing journey for me.

I am hosting five wonderful Go-Getters in reflecting on the difficulties and the wisdom in implementing this huge concept of self-love and self-care. 

I hosted them in two separate episodes, in which one is in the Indonesian language.

The first episode captured a reflection of four long term friends who are Go-Getters, operating in different fields, about what self-love and self-care mean for us.

I’ve known Anna Mattsson, Deo Onyango and Hugo Diaz since we’re all at university.

Throughout the past two decades or so, we’ve grown into different directions, doing different things, built up different lives. We’ve been taking on leadership positions, taking big risks and follow-through in various ways yet one of some common things that connect us throughout all these years is our strong commitment and desire to grow and to achieve. It is not an exaggeration to say that such commitment and desire is second nature to us.

Grew up in different parts of the world, worked and lived in many countries, and well into our 40s, we are now faced with the same questions – how do we love and care for ourselves, what are the costs of not doing it so far, why this has been so difficult to do, what have we discovered along the way and how our wellbeing impacts the world?


The second episode is in the Indonesian language. I am hosting two Go-Getters in their 30s who have chosen to embark on their subconscious mind healing and reprogramming as their commitment to self-love and self-care.

Both Listya Kusumawati and Aji Wibowo are sharing and reflecting their experiences in diving deep within themselves to heal their core wounds and the surprises they discovered and uncovered throughout the journeys. Hence, they feel more whole in themselves that the journey of achieving and growing become more uplifting. 


Needless to say, I feel grateful and humbled by the courage of my guest speakers who vulnerably yet so powerfully sharing each of their unique journeys.

Demystifying Essential Oil with Ale Franco

You see them around, essential oils, in small dark-coloured bottles.

I even bought some from Body Shop back in the days as they sold a spray that came in a bottle and a blend of oils to be put on a candle diffuser to help me sleep. It’s called Deep Sleep, I think. They may sell these with a different name these days.

I had sleeping problems around the time of the burnout in 2008. This spray and blend of oils worked wonders for me. Yet, I never really understood what these were. All I knew was they helped me.

Fast forward to 2016 – I found myself in a very stressful and challenging situation. I took six months off to take care of my mother, who was really ill while of building a new business (the one that I do now). My head was barely above water. Both my mother and I needed “something” to support each of us. The worse thing to happen when taking care of others is to fall ill. I was emotionally and physically exhausted despite having a carer that supported me in taking care of my mother.

My best friend had led me to experience essential oils two years prior. We both were in New York City during the thick of winter of 2014, and it was so cold. My body didn’t respond too well to such temperature so I was worried that I might get ill during this trip. She advised me to apply two drops of peppermint, lemon and a blend called Thieves on to my feet every day. Without even understanding what’s going on, that week, I felt well regardless of the harsh weather.


With this in mind, I connected with a lady in Singapore, who is a seasoned user of Young Living Essential Oil and started my journey with these oils.


I came back to Indonesia with different oils – some for my mother and some for me. I could not explain to my mother what I had for her; however, she agreed to give these oil a go.

Going into day three, my mother was asking for her oils. She felt strongly that these helped her. My mother had had 35 years of diabetes at the time. Her organs were in the process of stopping, and dementia kicked in 2014. She was not so keen on adding in more medication into her body. She felt that these more like a burden to her body than helping. So, when she asked for these oils, I knew for sure these helped her.

I also started using some for myself, and these were to help my immune system to stay robust. That year (and the year after, when I took another leave to take care of my mother until she passed away in 2017), with the support of these essential oils, I remained healthy. Since then, the essential oil is a part of my lifestyle.


COVID 19 pandemic is a long journey, my friends. I am continuously searching for ways to support us during this challenging period. Essential Oil may be something that you can explore.

So, what is an essential oil? Why is it so helpful for us?

To demystify it all, I am joined by Ale Franco, who has done her personal exploration and research to understand what these wonderful oils are.

Since 2014, with the mind of an industrial engineer, she attended several training and congresses in the subject to help her understand the underlying science behind essential oils. She also learned about the regulations and labelling policy around the household and personal care products that she felt it is necessary to share all the accumulative knowledge that she has gathered and also tested with others so we all can make healthier choices for our lives.

Dissecting Conscious Friendship

Peace. Happiness. Health.

To feel them, a journey inwards is the way to go.

I also realise, for many of us, the journey inward is daunting. There is a niggling sense of unsafeness in doing so. 
“What if I can’t find my way back out?”



In the “Returning to ourselves – The wisdom of trauma” retreat that I participated in, I learnt from Dr Gabor Maté that “Safety is the presence of connection. It is not a lack of threat”.

That was a big aha moment for me. It explains to me why the quality of my relationships, over quantity, is essential.

Moreover, COVID 19 has made it even more clear to us that to survive and even to thrive this prolonged unpredictable time where everyone in the world is impacted by, connections with others are crucial to lean on.


Friendship, adult friendship, grown-up friendship, conscious friendship is a massive asset for us. Are you in it, or several of it?

Let me share something with you.
Out of nowhere a few weeks ago, I experienced a sense of leakage in my energy system. I woke up tired; I ran out of energy during the afternoon and had intense dreams nightly for almost a week.

A string of baseless fear crept up. The thought of “I’m going to be out there homeless, on my own”, swirled around my mind often then. It stressed me out.

Do I have any reason to think that it is going to happen that way? NO!
There is no fact, and there has never been a fact to support that idea, EVER.

Yet, that fear was there. Loud and alive.

A few days sitting with this fear, breathing in and out calmly when it acted out, I realised that this fear is triggered by an elusive threat towards my connections with my family because of prolonged lockdown. The idea of not knowing when I can see my family again (as they are in the US and Australia) brought to the surface a sense of unsafeness that rooted in a deep fear that I have of being out there all alone. It acted out in a big way.


It was a call to action. I confided my fear to a couple of close friends. 
Being held with love as I shared, I felt the permission to acknowledge this crippling fear. I could breathe better after, and the anxiety started to move upwards and onwards. My friends didn’t try to fix the situation. They just listened and offered some more time for us to connect until this fear completely dissipates on its own.

I value a strong friendship. Yet, this doesn’t happen by itself. It requires an investment of all kinds to grow it.

While it holds an invitation to take time off, it also springs out energy for something…fresher!

As I’m preparing for my summer pause, I thought I’d introduce the new podcast “poster” for my podcast channel.

I started with this channel 2 years ago, in August 2018. It’s been fun, for sure, and filled with so much learning.

I am very grateful for all of you who listen, give feedback, ask questions, and contribute to the content as well.

What I’d like to share this time is the intention behind the podcast, as I don’t believe I’ve shared this here before.

In the journey of transformation, we all are asked to deep dive into ourselves before we can go up and onwards, manifesting what we want.

The journey to deep dive can feel daunting for some, hence the birth of Uplift My Life Today – the podcast. 

This channel is set up as a safe place to do just that, TOGETHER, accompanied by some experts and a familiar voice (that’s me!) to ease it a bit. I bring in topics that help us to go deeper within and upwards as inputs.

With a playful spirit, and supported by a great artist to bring out a concept in my mind and turn it into a fun image, this poster was created.
